After his military service, he pursued acting, attending the American Conservatory Theater where he studied alongside notable actors such as Annette Bening. Roberts has appeared in over 200 co-starring and guest roles in film and television over a career spanning more than 30 years. He is known for his roles in movies like "The Mask" (1994), "Christmas Vacation" (1989), "Herbie: Fully Loaded" (2005), and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" (1991), where he played Lieutenant Commander Dimitri Valtane—a role he reprised in the TV show "Star Trek: Voyager."
